How to Play as Canada in Hearts of Iron 4
Hearts of Iron 4 (Hoi4) is a grand strategy game that simulates World War II. You can choose to play as any country in the world, and try to lead it to victory or defeat. One of the most interesting and challenging countries to play as is Canada, a British Dominion that has a unique national focus tree as part of the Together for Victory expansion.
The national focus tree is a set of choices that guide your country's development and strategy. Canada's focus tree has six main branches that cover different aspects of its economy, military, and diplomacy. In this article, we will explore each branch and give some tips on how to use them effectively.
Industrial and Internal Politics Branch
This branch is the most important one for Canada, as it helps you overcome the Great Depression, increase your industrial capacity and resources, and unlock higher conscription laws. Most of the focuses in this branch require either war or some world tension to be available, so you should prioritize them as soon as possible.
The key focuses in this branch are:
War Bonds: This focus gives you a 10% boost to civilian factory construction speed and reduces consumer goods factories by 5%. It also unlocks several other focuses that improve your industry and infrastructure.
Defense Regulations: This focus gives you a 10% boost to military factory construction speed and reduces consumer goods factories by 5%. It also unlocks several other focuses that improve your research and production.
Commit to War: This focus allows you to change your conscription law from Volunteer Only to Limited Conscription, which gives you more manpower. It also reduces the effects of the Great Depression national spirit, which lowers your stability, political power gain, factory output, and dockyard output.
Send In the Zombies: This focus gives you access to higher conscription laws up to All Adults Serve, which greatly increases your manpower pool. It also gives you a research bonus for infantry equipment and support companies.
National Steel Car: This focus gives you two extra research slots, which are very valuable for catching up with other countries. It also gives you a research bonus for armor and motorized equipment.
Army Modernization Branch
This branch focuses on improving your ground forces by giving you research bonuses for infantry, armor, artillery, and support divisions. It requires Send In the Zombies from the previous branch to unlock the last tier of focuses.
The key focuses in this branch are:
Army Expansion Act: This focus gives you 150 army experience, which you can use to design and upgrade your divisions. It also gives you a research bonus for land doctrine.
Canadian Engineers: This focus gives you a research bonus for engineer company and signals company, which are useful support units that improve your divisions' combat performance.
Mechanized Offensive: This focus gives you a research bonus for motorized infantry and mechanized infantry, which are fast and mobile units that can exploit gaps in enemy lines.
Canadian Tank Program: This focus gives you a research bonus for light tanks, medium tanks, heavy tanks, and tank destroyers. It also allows you to create variants of existing tank models with your army experience.
Artillery Modernization Program: This focus gives you a research bonus for artillery, anti-tank guns, anti-air guns, and rocket artillery. It also allows you to create variants of existing artillery models with your army experience.
Strengthen the Commonwealth Ties Branch
This branch is the historical path that keeps Canada within the Allies faction led by the United Kingdom. It provides bonuses to Commonwealth technology sharing and other buffs to industry and resources. It also allows you to intervene in wars involving other Commonwealth members or support them with lend-lease.
The key focuses in this branch are:
The Crown Corporation: This focus gives you access to four design companies that aa16f39245
